Paul was born June 6, 1959 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has lived in the Grand Rapids area for most of his life. Paul attended Hope College, graduating with a double major in business administration and psychology.

He entered the financial services industry in 1981 with IDS (formerly American Express and now Ameriprise Financial). Paul began his career as a financial advisor, became a district manager and eventually a field Vice President with American Express. He left American Express to start an independent financial planning firm with Mark Harcek in 1998. Paul has earned the advanced designations of Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
